To celebrate National Physical Fitness and Sports Month and Older Americans Month, Oakwood Common invites the public to join its annual “National Senior Health and Fitness Day” event on Wednesday, May 30, 2012. This year’s theme is “Get Moving . . . Start Improving!”
The day’s events will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Oakwood Common lobby with a “Community Walk-A-Thon.” Dearborn Mayor John B. O’Reilly, Jr. is scheduled to lead walkers along the scenic paths that surround the retirement community located at 16351 Rotunda in Dearborn.
The walk will be followed by a special proclamation issued by the Mayor and the announcement of Oakwood Common’s Biggest Loser Challenge. Light refreshments and prize drawings will also be available.
At 10:30 a.m. Lois Sczomak, a registered dietician with Oakwood Healthcare System, will present “Eating Well on a Diabetic Diet” and at 11 a.m. Carla Schneider of Oakwood Corporate Services will talk about the Oakwell program.
According to Shavon Baker, activities coordinator for Oakwood Common, the public is invited to attend any or all of the morning activities and presentations.
“We know that the first step toward improving is to get moving,” said Baker, who also leads a variety of exercise programs for the retirement community. “Just ask our residents.”
