Detroit Tigers Interested in Dearborn Native Derek Lowe

With the MLB trade deadline less than two weeks away, the Detroit Tigers reportedly have expressed interest in rounding out their starting rotation with Atlanta Braves right-hander Derek Lowe.

There might be more than one homecoming in Dearborn this August, as the Detroit Tigers are interested in acquiring Dearborn native Derek Lowe from the Atlanta Braves, FoxSports.com reports.

While “Major League sources” said the Tigers are looking into a trade for the starting pitcher before the July 31 trade deadline, no serious talks have been made.

The 38-year-old right-hander is 5-7 this year with a 4.30 ERA.

The Tigers are in desperate need of additional starting pitching behind all-world workhorse Justin Verlander. And Lowe, a journeyman sinker-baller with 162 career wins and a bevy of postseason experience, could be the answer.

Lowe was a four-sport standout at , earning a scholarship to play basketball at Eastern Michigan University. He chose to continue playing baseball, however, after his number was called by the Seattle Mariners in the eighth round of the 1991 MLB Draft.

Having played for four teams, Lowe threw a no-hitter in 2002 and earned a World Series ring with the Boston Red Sox in 2004. He’s owed $6 million through the rest of this season and $15 million in 2012, the final year of his four-year deal.

The Braves, boasting a bumper crop of power arms in their farm system, are reportedly interested in a right-handed hitting outfielder. They’re currently 3.5 games behind the National League East-leading Philadelphia Phillies.
