2 Dearborn Wrestlers Advance, 1 Drops in First Round of State Finals

Dearborn High senior Arfan Khathem lost his match, as well as injuring his left shoulder. Divine Child's Jamie Jakes and Dearborn resident and Catholic Central wrestler Alec Mooradian will advance to the quarterfinals.

senior Arfan Khathem lost on a 7-0 decision to Portage Central's Dominic Latora (145 pounds) in the first round of varsity wrestling state finals.

Khathem was to make it to the finals, which are being held Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

Latora maintained control for much of the match against Khathem. Compounding problems for Khathem was an injury to his shoulder. The wrestler had to take an extended injury timeout in the third round because of his left arm. He finished the match, but didn't get close to scoring a takedown.

Khathem will compete in the consolation round on Friday morning.

 wrestler Jamie Jakes, who is competing in Division 2 of state finals, will advance to the quarterfinals on Friday afternoon after winning his match against Jorden Thomson (152 pounds) of Corunna High School in a 5-4 decision on Thursday.

Dearborn resident and Catholic Central senior Alec Mooradian (152 pounds) defeated Nick Vandermeer of Clarkston in a 6-0 decision, and will advance to the quarterfinals for Division 1.
