Accomplishment: For Onusko, who can be seen in campaign posters all over the walls of O.L. Smith, the last year of middle school will mean one of productivity.

The 13-year-old student has thrown his hat in the ring for student council president, and is one of six hopefuls seeking the coveted spot.

“I have a lot of ideas that could make the school a better place to learn,” said Onusko, who has previously served on the student council.

Active in community, church and sports activities, Onusko said he enjoys trying to make a difference at the school, and helping other students.

“I really think this is great school, and I’m going to miss it when I’m gone,” he said. “But I’m going to try a little of everything this year (in terms of clubs and activities).”

Key to awesomeness: Onusko’s additional activities at school include serving as a WEB (Where Everyone Belongs) leader–a group of students that helps and welcomes incoming sixth graders. He has also been a captain on the basketball team.

The eighth grade is a landmark for most students because it’s the final year before high school, but for Onusko, it also means going to a completely new school–St. Frances Cabrini High School in Allen Park.

He’s excited about the new opportunity, but said he will miss some friends.

“I won’t be with some friends that I’ve had for a long time,” he said. “But it’s going to be fun.”

Outside of school, Onusko takes part in a lot of activities that help people in the community–many of which are through Onusko’s church, .

At school, Onusko said his favorite classes are math and language arts. Though he works hard at school, Onusko said he’s not sure what college he’d like to attend, or what he’d like to pursue as a career path.

Onusko is the son of Brian and Adina Onusko of Dearborn.
