Troy Mom Encourages You to Get Involved with the School

Katie Taylor Mowrey blogs on Patch and so should you.

Why get involved with the area school?

For Katie Taylor Mowery, the answer is simple. She has children in school and she has the time.

She encourages others if they can find just a little bit of time, helping out the school if well worth the effort.

Many interesting people blog on Patch and we want to introduce you to some of them. Each Wednesday we will highlight a new Patch blogger.

Today, we talk to Mowery, who blogs about school and community issues in Troy.

Where did you grow up?

Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan and attended Grosse Pointe South High School - Go Blue Devils!

What are your hobbies?

My two kids fill my calendar beautifully. From time to time, I return to running (although nowadays it resembles a gentle jog). I enjoy taking photos, but am an absolute amateur.

Favorite book?

Recent good read, Gone Girl. I am not a high volume reader - but my friends give me great suggestions.

Favorite movie?

Tough to pick a favorite. Top Five: Hoosiers, The Cutting Edge, Better Off Dead, Sound of Music, Devil Wears Prada.

What do you love about Troy?

Troy is home to a rich blend of cultures, commerce, recreation and people in general. It also has an amazing foundation of excellent school district and city government. Both have a history of strong infrastructure and financial management. We have the best level of services for the lowest dollar amount in taxes. People sometimes complain about their taxes - but if you line us up with our neighboring communities - you would be thanking our city and school administrations for the highly professional jobs they do.

What encouraged you to get involved with the schools? My kids are school age and I have time. Perfect match.

What would you tell people who are interested but not fully involved?

If you can find time - a lot or a little, you will be paid back 10-fold by the look on your child's face when they see you helping at school. It generates powerful pride and spirit. It strengthens the connection between you, your child and your school. You also learn a lot about the different personalities at school - teachers and classmates. It helps you understand your child's daily life. Our kids spend seven hours a day at school (not counting bus time). Aren't you a little curious what it's like there?
