Parents, Teachers Unite to Install Security System at Dearborn Elementary School

The Whitmore-Bolles Elementary PTA is hosting an event on May 18 at Ford Lanes to raise funds for a new security system.

A security measure of this significance will be a first for any school in the Dearborn Community Schools District.

In light of recent school violence, such as the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012, it seems school safety is on the mind of many parents and grandparents these days.

"Things are different than they were when I grew up" grandparent Linda Myshock said. "The safety of our schools should be top priority."

The event has drawn the support of many area businesses including the presenting sponsor, Lee Family Dental, Advertising Accents, Inc., Vivid Maintenance, and others.

"It's a wonderful example for our children to see so many parents, community leaders and educators working together to create a safe learning environment," parent Sarah Ford said.

The system will require authorized personnel to either swipe a card or enter a code to gain access to the building. Cameras will also be installed, enabling faculty to see who is at the doors.

"Our goal is to have the system operational before the next school year begins in September," Whitmore-Bolles Principal Kristin Waddell said.

The event, known as "Whitmore BOWLS for Safety Presented by Lee Family Dental," will be a festive one, complete with raffles, pizza, bowling, drawings and sponsor booths.

Whitmore-Bolles is expecting between 150 to 300 bowlers and their families.

"Support has been overwhelming but help is still needed," Waddell said. "There are many ways you can get involved, we still have sponsor packages available, and tickets to attend the event, so come on out and support the kids and have some fun, too."
