Oakman Students Show Their Anti-Bullying Abilities With Public Assembly

The hourlong program included an Oakman-created video, talks by school and public officials, and a special surprise from Dearborn Rep. George Darany.

students and staff put on a display of the Dearborn school's anti-bullying efforts Thursday morning with an assembly held with parents, as well as public and school officials.

"We're making a difference in our schools and community by taking a stand against bullying," said Oakman Principal Radewin Awada.

Dearborn Public Schools earlier this month. The new program includes mandated efforts by all schools to teach students about appropriate behavior toward their peers, as well as the recording of bullying incidents within the district.

Oakman, explained Parent-Teacher Liaison Nadia Dakroub, is ahead of the game. They've already been holding bullying assemblies once per month, as well as giving kids daily reminders to treat others with respect.

The hourlong assembly included several pep talks from Principal Awada, as well as Dearborn Mayor Jack O'Reilly, who told the kids, "Bullying hurts everybody–even the bully, because they get a reputation and people avoid them."

O'Reilly revealed that he was sometimes bullied as a child for his weight.

Rep. George Darany (D-Dearborn) also spoke–or rather, sang–to kids about his thoughts on bullying. The song garnered laughs from the students, but also sent them a message that the kids they are afraid of may someday become their friends.
