Learn About College, Certification Opportunities at Career Center's Spring Open House

The Michael Berry Career Center will host a fundraiser dinner and open house on Thursday, March 14.

To kick off their annual enrollment drive for the 2013-2014 school year, the staff at the Michael Berry Career Center are hosting a Spring Open House and Spaghetti Dinner. The event will take place at the MBCC from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 14.

Families of Dearborn Public School students who will be in grades 10, 11 or 12 next year are invited to come have dinner, tour the facility, meet the staff and learn more about the college and career training opportunities offered by the center.

The Michael Berry Career Center is located in Dearborn Heights, and is part of the Dearborn Public Schools system. It offers a variety of college credit and certification opportunities to DPS students, including health services, information technology and hospitality services. Students spend a half day at the MBCC and a half day at their home school. Bus transportation is provided.

The spaghetti dinner is being held as a fundraiser for MBCC students’ community service project, Kids Against Hunger. Proceeds will be used by MBCC students to package meals for distribution to over 10,000 needy families.

Pre-sale tickets for the event are $5.50 and available at the MBCC. Tickets will be $6 at the door and will last until the spaghetti runs out.

MBCC staff and students will be available at the center during and after dinner to provide tours of the facility, talk about their classes and answer questions about the programs at the MBCC. Current MBCC students and alumni will be present to demonstrate what they learn in class and talk about the MBCC experience. There will also college representatives available to talk about college credit opportunities available to MBCC students.

For more information about the MBCC, visit http://berry.dearbornschools.org. Current DPS high school students who wish to visit the MBCC for a day to learn more about our programs can click on the “Bring a Buddy to Berry” link on the website to request a half-day visit. Enrollment for students who wish to take classes at the MBCC is online at http://berry.dearbornschools.org/Enroll.

Wasn't a major portion of the deficit a result of the failure of students to repay $$$millions inRead More student loans? There is a rumor that HFCC wants to forgive those loans and pass on the debt to Dearborn taxpayers. Was there due diligence regarding the awarding of these loans?

Way too much for a college having financial problems.

Hasn't even worked one day? Not one day in 15 years? Really? Not even credit for one day? When IRead More worked at the Press & Guide (which eliminated my position in a budget restructuring that has continued under various corporate owners at the P&G for a decade and a half, resulting in them moving their offices to Southgate and more recently just out-and-out eliminating their editor, sports editor and photographer) we had a policy of no anonymous letters to the editor. This was done because, while everyone has the right to express their opinion, putting a real name with an opinion meant people displayed more decorum and, well, less cowardice than is allowed in online comments from the shadows. Joseph, the benefit of post-employment health care after just eight years of service may have, in the early 1990s, been more acceptable in some way I can't figure (retention of key department heads has been cited as a reason, as was that it apparently mirrored a benefit for state officials), but it clearly was part of the excesses of Wayne County that was unjustifiable and unsustainable in the 2000s. This practice was ended two years ago by a resolution I introduced.
