January Is School Board Recognition Month

January is School Board Recognition Month—a time to salute the hard work and dedication of our school board members.

The Dearborn Public School District is joining districts across the state in thanking these community volunteers for their enduring dedication to public education.

“On behalf of the staff, students, and parents I want to thank our board members for their service to our community and the hours of time they have dedicated to making the Dearborn Public Schools a great place for children to learn,” said Brian Whiston, superintendent of the Dearborn Public Schools.

The school board began the new year with a brief meeting to select new officers.

During the meeting, Trustee Hussein Berry was selected as board president, Trustee James Schoolmaster assumed the role of vice president, Trustee Aimee Schoelles was selected as the new board secretary, and Trustee Roxanne McDonald took on the duties of board treasurer.  

Board members serve in their officer position for one year and serve on the board for a term of six years.

The men and women serving Dearborn and their years of service are:

• Trustee Pamela Adams—18 years
• Trustee Hussein Berry—4 years
• Trustee Joseph Guido—20 years
• Trustee Mary Lane—13 years
• Trustee Roxanne McDonald—2 years
• Trustee Aimee Schoelles—13 years
• Trustee James Schoolmaster—12 years

Board of Education members in Dearborn develop policies and make tough decisions that help shape the future of our education system. They bear responsibility for an annual budget of $170 million, 19,400 students, more than 2,400 employees and 34 buildings in the Dearborn Public Schools. 

They also oversee Henry Ford Community College. 

“The Dearborn Board of Education trustees are an outstanding group of professionals dedicated to providing a quality education to all children in our classrooms and truly believe that all students can succeed,” Whiston said.
