HFCC M-TEC Hosts 'Detroit Re-Nailed: A Symposium on Deconstruction'

The Henry Ford Community College (HFCC) M-TEC division’s role in regional “Green Construction” continues to grow as it hosts its first “Detroit Re-Nailed: A Symposium on Deconstruction” from 8:30 a.m.to 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17. This event will take place at HFCC’s M-TEC facility, located at 3601 Schaefer Road in Dearborn.

The goals of this symposium are to advance the dialogue in the community on moving deconstruction – the selective dismantling of building components for recycling, re-use and waste management – into job creation, as well as its economic feasibility. This symposium targets architects, urban planners, engineers, government agencies, construction companies, community development corporations and students to develop the nascent deconstruction industry in Detroit by creating jobs and improving the local economy.

“Detroit is poised to capitalize on a wealth of resources found in the deconstruction of abandoned homes, factories and schools,” said Tricia N. Llewellyn, director of M-TEC.

The symposium will also introduce employers and city agencies to available job training programs and the new deconstruction program at HFCC. During the symposium, attendees will be encouraged to strategize on how the deconstruction industry can move to a scale of profitability and job creation in the fields of construction, design and materials re-use.

The “Detroit Re-Nailed” schedule is as follows:

  • 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. – guest lectures/panels;
  • 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. – industry roundtable lunch;
  • 2 to 4 p.m. – site tours: Focus Hope and Mid-Town; and
  • 5 to 8 p.m. – “Detroit Re-Nailed” reception at 71 Garfield in Detroit (optional).

The cost to attend the symposium is $30 per person and $15 per student with valid school identification. Additionally, the Detroit chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) is offering up to five continuing education credits for participating architects.
