Dearborn Rotary Donates $5K for HFCC Scholarship

The Dearborn Rotary Club Endowed Nursing Scholarship will award $500 annually to a student.

The Dearborn Rotary Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Rotary Club of Dearborn, recently presented a check for $5,000 to the Henry Ford Community College Foundation for the Dearborn Rotary Club Endowed Nursing Scholarship. Scholarships of up to $500 each are awarded annually.

“Students apply for the scholarship each year. Depending on the annual earnings from the endowment, we usually award one to two scholarships each academic year,” said John J. Lewandowski, executive director of Development at Henry Ford Community College.

Scholarships are for current or incoming Henry Ford Community College students in the nursing program. Students have until March 1, 2013 to apply for the upcoming academic year. Requirements are a minimum 3.25 GPA and involvement in community service. Scholarship can be used for tuition, books and fees.  New and current HFCC students may apply for the scholarship online by visiting www.hfcc.edu/tuition_and_payment/scholarships.

Dearborn Rotary Foundation began funding the annual nursing scholarship in 1999. Scholarship became endowed in 2002.

“The Dearborn Rotary Foundation is pleased to continue our support of a nursing scholarship at Henry Ford Community College, said Valerie Murphy-Goodrich, chair of the Dearborn Rotary Foundation. “It is an investment in the health of our community and in education.”

The Rotary Club of Dearborn distributes up to $35,000 annually through five scholarship programs for up to 20 graduating high school seniors from Dearborn schools in addition to the two HFCC nursing scholarships. This annual distribution is met through a variety of fundraising efforts.
