The scholarship comes from the couple's belief in community service.

Richard Metzler was a Ford Motor Company employee, and Doris Metzler was a Dearborn Public Schools teacher. Both invested their careers and lives in Dearborn and believed service to community was a critical educational and life experience. Before Richard's passing, the couple decided to honor this belief and his life with an endowment through the Dearborn Education Foundation.
