Voter Registration Deadline for August Primary Set for Monday

First-time voters and residents with a new address can register with the Secretary of State's Office.

Michigan residents have until July 8 to register to vote in the Aug. 6 election, according to the Secretary of State's Office.

In Dearborn, a primary election will be held for candidates running for mayor, city council, and city clerk.

There are currently five candidates on the mayoral ticket, three for clerk, and 21 for the seven council seats. Voters will narrow the field to two, two and 14, respectively, for the general election in November.

Dearborn residents who are not registered to vote can do so at City Clerk Kathleen Buda's office at city hall, 13615 Michigan Ave. Residents can also register at the driver’s license bureau inside the Dearborn Police Station, 16099 Michigan Ave., or any Secretary of State office.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old by election day and U.S. citizens to register. Applicants must also be residents of Michigan and of the city or township in which they wish to register.

"Because communities in 56 counties in Michigan are holding elections this August, I encourage all those who qualify to register to vote," said Ruth Johnson, Michigan's chief election officer. "You only need a few minutes to register and then you'll be able to participate in one of America's greatest freedoms - voting."

When registering, voters must present identification or sign an affidavit stating they do not have identification with them.

A mail-in form is available at www.michigan.gov/elections. First-time voters who register by mail must vote in person in their first election unless they hand-deliver the application to their local clerk, are 60 years old or older, are disabled or are eligible to vote under the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act.
