Terry Jones' Detroit Appeals Court Hearing Postponed

The hearing was originally set to take place Sept. 8 in Detroit and concerned the Dearborn court ruling prohibiting Jones from demonstrating in front of the Islamic Center of America.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office announced Tuesday that this week's appeal hearing on an April decision made against Quran-burning Floridian Terry Jones in Dearborn has been postponed.

The hearing was originally scheduled for Sept. 8, but has been rescheduled for Oct. 6 at 2 p.m. in front of Judge Robert  L. Ziolkowski of the Third Circuit Court Civil Division in Detroit.

On April 22, Jones and his associate Wayne Sapp–both of the anti-Islamic organization Stand Up America!–were by a jury in Dearborn after a planned protest in front of the brought them to the .

In that decision, Dearborn Chief Judge Mark Somers ordered Jones and Sapp to pay a $1 peace bond each, and to stay away from the Islamic Center and adjacent area for three years. They refused, and were briefly jailed.

Jones and Sapp are being defended by the Ann Arbor-based Thomas More Law Center, a Christian-focused firm known for defending cases having to do with freedoms of religion and religious speech.

Despite the rescheduling of his appeals trial, Jones and Sapp will be to speak in Lansing on the Capitol steps on Wednesday. According to press releases issued by Stand Up America!, they will be speaking about the Sept. 11 10th anniversary, as well as publicly supporting Michigan House of Representatives Bill 4769, which–if passed–would forbid use of religious law in legal contexts.

Stand Up America! also claimed via press release that they will be joined on Wednesday by the bill's author and main sponsor, Rep. Dave Agema. Rep. Agema's office, however, said Tuesday that the Grandville Republican has no such plans.
