Snyder to Sign Pure Michigan Bill in Dearborn

Gov. Rick Snyder will be stopping by Dearborn's Henry Ford Museum Thursday afternoon to sign a bill to add funding to the state's Pure Michigan campaign.

Gov. Rick Snyder will make a stop in Dearborn on Thursday afternoon for a public signing of legislation that will add funding to the state’s Pure Michigan project.

The signing will take place at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the .

The bill allows for an additional $10 million in funding for the 2011 Pure Michigan promotional budget, bringing the total allowance for the campaign to $25 million.

It passed the state Senate on Feb. 24 and will be the first piece of legislation signed into law by the new administration.

Democratic former Gov. Jennifer Granholm was also a proponent of continuing funding for Pure Michigan. According to MLive.com, in October 2010 Granholm urged state legislators to move a portion of funds from the state's budget to continue the campaign after revenues for FY 2010 came in $100 million above projections.

Pure Michigan had its budget slashed $5.4 million earlier last year. As a result, the fall campaign was cancelled.

That funding bill is the one being signed into law Thursday by Gov. Snyder.

Currently, the Pure Michigan campaign has support from both Republicans and Democrats in the state House and Senate, although disagreements have arisen over the effectiveness of it, as well as a permanent funding source for it.

Pure Michigan has been touted as a successful campaign for bringing tourism into the state. It uses advertising and its website to promote everything from skiing spots to beaches to historical attractions such as Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. The Pure Michigan website even lists The Henry Ford as one of its featured destinations.

“Tourism is a vital component of Dearborn’s economy, and Pure Michigan is helping to drive tourists and their discretionary dollars to our community,” said George Moroz, special assistant to the president of The Henry Ford, in an e-mail invitation send out earlier this week for the signing.

Invitations have been sent out to members of the Dearborn Chamber of Commerce, and The Henry Ford is urging those with a vested interest in the state’s tourism industry to attend. The public is not explicitly invited; however, representatives from the museum have advised that any museum ticket holders will be able to attend the signing if they so choose.
