Obama Gun Control Proposals Unveiled: What's Your Take?

The president unveiled a sweeping number of proposals Wednesday designed to curb gun violence. What do you think?

President Obama on Wednesday unveiled what is being called the most ambitious gun control agenda in decades, initiating 23 separate executive actions aimed at curbing what he called “the epidemic of gun violence in this country,” according to The Washington Post.

According to the White House fact sheet, Obama’s plan includes:

  • Reinstating and strengthening the assault weapons ban.
  • Restoring a 10-round limit on ammunition magazines.
  • Getting rid of armor-piercing bullets.
  • Ending a freeze on research into gun violence.
  • Providing additional tools to prevent and prosecute gun crime.
  • Calling on Congress to pass a $4 billion proposal to help communities keep 15,000 police officers on the streets, as well as new gun trafficking legislation that would “impose serious penalties on those who help get guns into the hands of criminals."
  • Making schools safer by giving communities the opportunity to hire up to 1,000 school resource officers and school counselors.

In Michigan, Sen. Carl Levin quickly released the following statement:

"I strongly support the efforts President Obama outlined today to curb the gun violence that plagues our nation. I have long supported legislation to restore the ban on assault weapons. I also have supported closing the gun show loophole to strengthen the background checks that keep weapons out of the hands of criminals, terrorists, domestic abusers, and other dangerous individuals. I support our police agencies, who have implored us to make these changes.

“The steps the president outlined today are important in protecting Americans, while respecting the rights of law-abiding gun owners. The president is right. It’s time for us to act, and Congress should do so.”

Dearborn Rep. John Dingell also issued a statement on the announcement:

“I appreciate President Obama’s thoughtful effort in having Vice President Biden bring all parties to the table as we begin an important national conversation that I feel is both worthy of our country and worthy of our people. I look forward to continuing this discussion with the people of Southeast Michigan as we work to find the best way to protect our people, and also protect the very freedoms and ideals central to this Nation’s founding, including the Second Amendment. I intend to work towards accomplishing both.

“To solve the problem of incidents of gun violence and help end the tragedies we’ve seen far too often, it will take a thorough effort in working together, on both sides of the aisle and on all sides of belief and ideology. I will look over the President’s proposals carefully and with the same thoughtful regard with which I feel this conversation, and the American people, deserve.”

Okay---let me get this staright. Assualt weapons ban...lets first define what an assult weapon is. Is it one that has a pistol grip? Is it one that can hold a magazine with more than one round? Well, hunting rifle and multiple round capacity, they just don''t have that pistol grip. I don't think pistol grips cause gun deaths of any ki nd. A 10 round limit in magazines? Okay, I'll just cary multile magazine in my pocket. That's what most of these sick people do in the first place. Ban amor piercing bullets? When was the last time anyone shot someone with an amor piercing bullet? Like NEVER? •Ending a freeze on research into gun violence? Since when did we ever issue a ban on any study at anytime? •Calling on Congress to pass a $4 billion proposal to help communities keep 15,000 police officers on the streets...wow---that's what Obama does best---spend money and never talk about spendig cuts. Let's keep heading for that cliff. •Making schools safer by giving communities the opportunity to hire up to 1,000 school resource officers and school counselors. ...more money---more catering to the usual constituencies. There is now law of any kind that can be passed, or ever oill be passed, that can prevent someone from murdering someonew else..whether by gun, bats, tire irons, etc. We already have laws that prevent anyone with a felony or serious misdemeanors from leagally obtaing an gun, so that just leaves sll us law abiding folk. Are we reallyu a threat?

I think Obama has no respect for the Constitution. Nor does he have respect for We the People. Levin and Dingell lack the same respect. The United States Constitution is the law of this land. Period.

there is and has always been a ban on criminals and its illegal to be a criminal and/or killer but when has that stopped them only the the lawbiding citizen will be without a gun to protect himself , the criminals will alwaya have guns, the purpose of the second ammendment was to insure that a tyranical government would not run roughshod over the citizens as present government is attempting to do

This president is a joke ....time to Impeach him for everything he has and is doing to this great nation ....

Even the people in Ronmey's home state voted against him. How about Massachusets, too. Where was Wisconsin? Why would you impeach someone who was just voted into office? Was it Obama's fault that these kids were killed? Do you expect him to do NOTHING? Remember Bush won the war when he landed on the aircraft carrier. Too many guns for too long a time? Just make and sell more and keep the economy going.

Tom...spoken like a typical kool aid drinking, liberal, progressive democrat! He wants tinker with our constitution…that which he swore to uphold. Not just the parts he likes. If he wants to amend it, there is a prescribed way to do it...not by government fiat. Perhaps we should amend it by "Executive Order" what you can say or express, or what church you can attend, not allowing you to have a trial by a jury of your peers, or any of the other constitutional rights you have now. We'll just tweak them a bit Tom...don't worry, just let Obama do what he wants....not by what the constitution states he must do. And, by the way, Bush never said we won the war. He said "mission accomplished", and was speaking to the airmen on the aircraft carrier that had just done THEIR part to run Saddam Hussein out of office and into a spider hole and allowed our troops to march into Baghdad. I just made a fresh batch of that kool aid Tom...want a glass?

Since this unconstitional "legislation" will probably pass, upon passing, arrest warrants should be drawn up against Obama,Holder, and the head of the ATF for conspiring to provide real "assault weapons" to certain drug gangs in Mexico, resulting in thousands of murders,in Mexico, even extending into the U.S. Los Zetas are one of those entities. This fits perfectly with the language of the Presidents proposed law against providing weapons to criminals. Let's see it happen.

I refer to the "Fast and Furious" operation.

Yes Tom B, I expect him to do nothing because it's NOT his business TO do anything about legal guns. If he wants TO do anything concerning Sandy Hook, he can limit the amount and frequency of the proscribing of Psychotropic drugs, which is more responsible than a rifle and a couple of pistols in that affair. After all, Mayor Bloomberg of NY, seeks to limit painkillers to patients in hospitals,in New York, so there is the precedence . There...a Democratic politician who seeks to prolong the agony of pain patients experience while at the same time...NO limits in the issuance of psychotropic drugs, which sets these people off. Pay attention to the next round of drug commercials on prime time TV. The don't say what they are for most of the time, but they sure mention the incredible side effects.

Lap, excellent points. There will always be crazies, and they will always ignore the law to do bad things like shooting people. More gun laws mean nothing to the crazies. Want to protect our schools from kids who can just carry a Glock into school and shoot himself? Start by redressing the dress code. Encourage tight clothing rather than discourage, the ladies will like that change. Why? Watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Epeo8Pfm1xM There will always be glitches in any protective measures. We need to use a little commonsense, like not wasting time patting down 6 yr girls or 90 yr grandmas going through the checkpoints at airline terminals. There is no equality when it comes to safety. Spend more time with likely suspects. Who are they? Do profiling while checking folk. Red flag the guy with no luggage, from Syria, a one way ticket paid by cash, and looks like a terrorist. Check him out good. With all those flags, even if he is dressed in a suit. It is for his protection, and the others on the plane. Ditto for schools. If a student looks like a crazie, acts like a crazie, he is asking for help. Give it to him. I bet I can walk into any Dearborn school, act normal, and beat the current school security systems. The sign says check in at the office. Folk that follow the law say no problem. Crazies, nope! Dearborn needs the door buzzer system with video big time. Not that costly. https://aclickawayremotes.com/category/Intercom-Systems/index.html
