Miller's Bar Plans Expansion, Adds Banquet Room

The restaurant is known for its homemade hamburgers, and has grown in popularity since opening in 1942.

Miller's Bar will soon be expanding from its current location at 23700 Michigan Ave. in Dearborn.

The Dearborn Planning Commission approved a special land use and site plan request for the restaurant on Monday to allow the business to expand into an adjoining building in order to add a banquet room and accomodate customer overflow during the holiday season.

"We don't feel like we're asking for too much," co-owner Mark Miller said. "We've been at the same location for 71 years and we'd like a space to be able to host banquets that we have to currently turn down all of the time."

Miller said ideally the banquet room would accomodate up to 60 people.

Janet Scheuher-Nalezty, senior planner for the city of Dearborn, said as part of the expansion, Miller's Bar will still have to apply to the Zoning Board of Appeals for a parking variance. Because the expansion will include part of a building with two retail tenant spaces and four upper floor apartments, the ZBA requires 88 parking spaces minimum on the property, and there are currently 81 spaces available.

Miller said the bar attracts customers from all over the United States. It was recently named as the "Best Burger" restaurant in Wayne County by Hour Detroit magazine.
