Michigan Delegates Say DNC Will Draw Sharp Contrast to RNC

Delegates said they are set to move the country forward and Barack Obama is the man to continue that push.

Michigan delegates say they're set to move the country forward and to help Barack Obama win the November election.

Lansing's Mark Brewer, chair of the Michigan Democratic Party, said that the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte will strike a sharp contrast to last week's Republican National Convention in Tampa.

"We won't have people talking to empty chairs," Brewer said, referencing Clint Eastwood's unscripted performance at the RNC last Thursday.

"Last week they were big on platitudes and short on specifics," Brewer said. "No talk on how they were going to voucherize Medicare, privatize Social Security, Romney has surrounded himself basically with Bush retreads. If he's elected he will take us back."

Brewer said it's important the DNC draw that contrast, point out that it's time to move forward.

"In Michigan, if Mitt Romney were president the auto industry would be gone today," Brewer said. "The president did a very brave thing by coming to the rescue of the auto industry and Mitt Romney famously said 'let Detroit go bankrupt.'"

Brewer said the country isn't where it needs to be, but reminds people "we were losing a millions jobs a month when Obama took office."

"We are going in the right direction, we are digging out of a huge hole," Brewer said. "That's the contrast we draw to four years ago."

Edna Bell of Detroit is a 14th Congressional volunteer in Michigan. While she said our country isn't where she would like for it to be four years after the election of Barack Obama, it's moving in the right direction.

Bell, a precinct delegate and a national delegate at-large, attended her first convention in 1996 and said she stays involved in the political process because of her children and her grandchildren.

"They need to see a country that cares about them and works to make sure they are OK," Bell said.

She said she hopes the Obama administration, and the DNC itself, will loudly tout the things that it has done in the last four years.

"I'm hoping all of our speakers this week will talk about all the promises that were kept and how we move forward," Bell said. "I hope they will tout those good things, and not cow-tow to what others say have happened."

Bell said no one else is talking about the things that have changed in four years and that she hopes that the Democratic Party will be its "biggest champions."

"Things have changed," Bell said. "I talk to every day people who are finding jobs or who are getting two or job offers. Things are getting better, they still need to get a lot better, but they are better than they were. We can see a path."

Bell said there are several issues she would love to hear discussed at the DNC this week, one being Obamacare and the "good things it has done." Jobs that have been saved. Good things that are being done for the middle class and the students. And the truth about Medicare.

"That's the things people aren't saying," she said. "Medicare is a huge issue, those of us on Medicare appreciate him saving Medicare for us."

To win this year, Bell said Obama is going to have to talk about the good things, something she said she's not sure he's capable of doing.

"He has to talk about the good things he's done, but I'm not sure he's capable of blowing his own horn," Bell said. "He needs to get people energized again, get them out again to vote, the same way he did four years ago."

Surprise: Bondholders are Not part owners. They are "Debtjolders" .They are like bank loans. They get paid First because most of the times they loaned money to GM for equipment and machinery and buildings. They loaned money to GM for advance payment on GM receivables.
Bonds are not anywhere similar to a "stock" investment. They usually "collateralize" the equipment, Just like your mortgage on your home. When you default, the Bank then owns the home. That is how all Bond transactions are handled in business. The bondholders had the legal rights to sell the equipment and get back whatever they could. This President circumvented all of that. Not in the name of fairness, but in the name of "playing big-shot". (With our Federal Taxpayer money). With no congress approvals. There were many alternative auto companies people could have bought cars from. GM did not go through a normal Ch11 bankruptcy. GM , the unions, and the President trashed thousands of families who were "robbed" of their retirement money. All in the name of Jobs and saving the auto industry. That is selfish and frankly against any laws in this US. I suggest you get the facts, because your delegation is of course partial to a party. I got no gripes with that. What's done is done. But, please, don't call this President "BRAVE".
CPA September 11, 2012 at 03:56 pm
Sorry, regular bondholders are not paid first in a bankruptcy. Other creditors might be paid "first" if they held a security interest in some kind of property - which the regular bond holders did not. Sorry, you may not like the rules, but they were brought to you by your bankruptcy "reform" GOP buddies and passed by Congress ... and signed by W. Yeah, and allot of people lost money.
None of this would have happened had the banks stopped treating the economy like a casino. It is impossible for the president to spend money unless Congress has allocated it in some fashion. So get off your Obamaparanoia.
PaulRevere September 11, 2012 at 04:06 pm
Mr CPA:
Many Bonds have collateral. You are most certainly 100% wrong. Many bonds have rights that were not acknowledged in this GM fiasco. This was not a case of normal bankruptcy, and you know that. Go through GM's annual 10K 10Q's etc. Go through annual 10K's of any corporation and you will see the coverages of Bondholders. There are convertibles and numerous types of bonds. I stand by my comments.

CPA, where do senior secured debentures stand compared to unions in terms of seniority under current bankruptcy laws?
It depends on who they voted for! <Rimshot> Thank you, I'll be here all week. Try the veal.

I'm still waiting MR CPA.
Do you even know what a 10K is? Did you find how many bondholders were "robbed". How many families Obama would ruin for a vote. Michigan voters should know that the DNC is different from the RNC. A BIG DIFFERENCE. Democrats today are not the same as the Democrats I grew up to know. Go ask your Employer, if he/she likes what the Obama-Health TAX is about to cost him. Ask your employer , if your job is in jeopardy because of the new 5.9% medicare taxes on unlimited income go into effect. 2013. Ask your employer if he/she can afford to pay the additional TAXES obamacare will cost him in 2014. Cost you in 2014. GM employees (unions) are a small part of Michigan. Yep--DNC is quite Different than RNC. The DNC is Not for the people. They are for the unions only. And that will cost many Michigan jobs (Yours?) starting 2013.

Points 2, 3, and 4, are mostly due to demographic shifts. That doesn't change the fact that the labor market is in utter turmoil right now.

Oh look, someone had some spare time to cut and paste and play with the google.
What is Romney/Ryan going to do about this? Where are his details? Keith, hate to burst your bubble, but not only is the media not reporting these numbers but they are likely far worse. Indeed, the entire recession we will likely discover at some point in the future was actually a depression---on a scale near the great depression of the 1930s. Luckily, after that depression, financial reforms were put into place and other New Deal legislation was passed so people did not starve. Of course, you would probably call that a welfare state. What you are neglecting to mention is how bad it WAS and how much better things are now. Sure, we have a long way to go, as your numbers show (which, BTW, I did not fact-check, for the sake of arguement, let's say they are somewhat accurate). So again, back to my orginal question: what is Mr. Successful Willard Romney going to do? No one knows because he has no plan. Aside from giving tax breaks to the super-rich, bank de-regulation (we saw how well that turned out in 2008), and other trickle-down bullshit that we already tried---AND IT DIDN'T WORK, tell me what voting for Romney/Ryan is going to initiate? You don't know, because he doesn't either. He stands for nothing, has no clue what to do (or won't tell us, for some unknown reason).
Jon Dufresne September 12, 2012 at 10:01 pm
Another one that tried to play with the google machine and cut-and-pasted.
More union-hating and rhetoric about the stimulus that is full of incorrect and misleading information. Throw in a couple of scare lines about Obamacare... Another one that has no clue what voting for Romney/Ryan would initiate, because he has no plan. Tell me, what EXACTLY is he going to do? You have no idea because neither does he.

LOL...I knew enough combing through this collection of downriver wanna-be republican technocrats would turn up this shitrag: canadian free press. Written by a woman who has several mental illnesses and fired from several jobs. Putting links from the likes of Judi McLeod is just embarassing yourself. Her rantings have been discredited many times over. Read more:
"Conservative writer Kevin Michael Grace has described McLeod's writing as that of an "emotionally incontinent ninth grader," [5] while Toronto Star columnist Antonia Zerbisias describes her as "eccentric" and the Canada Free Press as a "whacko news site." [6] Toronto Life magazine reported that McLeod was harassing city councillor Betty Disero. McLeod had been driving past Disero's home, taking pictures. [9] McLeod published the home address and photograph of Cathy Crowe, co-founder of the Toronto Disaster Relief Committee, in the CFP along with what Crowe's lawyer deemed defamatory statements. The lawyer alleged that McLeod was encouraging her readers to harass and even physically attack Crowe. [7] The paper also published the home address of "anti-poverty activist" John Clarke of the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty along with a photograph of the house he was renting."

I'm still waiting for you to ride through town, Paul Revere, and tell me EXACTLY (not generalities) what Willard Mitt Romney's plan is to magically turn the economy around. How will he encourage, support, or even force the private sector to hire people. You cannot tell us, because you have no idea and neither does Mitt. A candidate who has no clue and stands for nothing.

Ray Smith September 12, 2012 at 11:13 pm
Keith, voting for Romney-- and the party back in office that created this mess to begin with--is DUMB. I get a kick out of the Republicans criticizing Obama for not fixing the economy in 4 years, when they spent 8 destroying it, thanks to:
-- an unnecessary war in Iraq that cost thousands of lives and almost $1 trillion that Bush put on the nation's credit card. -- $1. 5 trillion in tax cuts--skewed primarily toward the wealthy--again, on the nation's credit card --More than $1 trillion on the prescription drug plan--again, unpaid for by Bush. Now, Romney wants to essentially double down on these policies, including giving $5 trillion in tax cuts (mostly for the wealthy), increase pentagon spending on programs the pentagon doesn't want or need, and increase taxes on the middle class to help pay for all this. Obama, on the other hand, is looking out for the middle class. And you want to vote for Romney? Unless you're part of the richest 1%, you need to have your head examined!

Bush left with $10Trillion debt.
Obama has that debt up to $16Trillion. Obama has borrowed evrything he claims credit for fixing. It's that simple. His Clunker program costed billions (Borrowed money) His extended Unemployment cost $1Trillion (Borrowed money) His 1st time home buyer Program costed $billions (Borrowed money) Gm bailout and volt subsidies and Tax forgiveness sudsidy and Interest forgiveness costed $25bil (borrowed money) His college credit subsidies cost $billions (All Borrowed money) His additional Payments to support teachers all around the country (All Borrowed Money) The Payroll tax cuts is "stealing money " that was for America's Retired workers. (that actually reduced Tax revenue of the Govt.. Something the Democrats do not want to do???? Obama actually reduces Tax revenue by allowing workers to keep Payroll taxes due on their earnings. RESULT: Obama has borrowed every penny he claims to spend to help the economy. Not one program above created a long-term job. So when Dearborn is serious about being patriotic to all of America, I would ask ,Who is going to pay off the enormous debt of the USA. If obamacare is so great , than why did unions ask for major Waivers? You have left the cost on all the rest of workers in America--Their employers will pay for your waivers. Taking money from any business, gives that employer less to Hire. Period. Wake up! That is exactly what Obamacare will do. Cripple every employer. Creates Zero jobs.

To all you Obama haters who rail against him because of our poor economy, you conveniently forget one thing: Our economy began collapsing under the reign of George W. Bush and the Republicans. After 8 years of Bush's disaster, we were losing about 700,000 jobs a month. Since Obama took over, we've gained nearly 5 million jobs and are continuing to add them every month. Is it happening fast enough? No--and Obama admits this. But, don't vote for Romney and go back to the same policies -- (cut taxes -- mostly for the wealthy) that got us into this mess in the first place. We tried that, and it didn't work! Stick with Obama. I know I am.

Ray says 8 years of Bush.
Hey Ray: in 2006 Nancy Pelosi and Harry reid controlled congress. That's when the economy started to drop. As far as jobs gained, 4 million jobs were at wages much less than those previously lost. Many were Govt jobs and many were people underemployed. Obama borrowed over $6 trillion dollars to prop up what he calls a recovery. Not one job is paid for -yet. America still has to pay the bills for these jobs. Do you understand that? Do you understand that there are 23 million people in America who are not working over $10 hour wages. That is the largest in History. Stop repeating what you hear on TV. Why don't you listen and read and make your own conclusions. What you just wrote are called "Information for the ignorant and Uninformed" I can't believe you still talk about Bush Policies after 4 years. What Policy does Obama have to cut our Debts. Raise taxes? Please tell us how much Taxes that will bring in. Now I will vote for Obama , if you can just put that number here. And convince me it will pay down our debt.

Romney would need a week of Debates to even begin on even grounds with the
"Ignorant" Obama supporters. Teaching obama supporters how to ADD $1bil + $1bil + $1TRill scares me. Does any Obama supporter, know the answer? Does any obama supporter know what this USA annual deficit is ? I shall assume NO, if none of you respond.
Ray Smith September 17, 2012 at 11:45 pm
Furthermore, Paul Revere, where were you (and Paul Ryan) when Bush was putting wars, a prescription drug plan and tax cuts (skewed to the wealthy) on the nation's credit card!? Huh? Where were you? In fact, Ryan voted for almost ALL of Bush's outrageous spending--including the cost of an unncessary war in Iraq (America's biggest military blunder ever) which not only cost thousands of American lives, but hundreds of thousands of Iraqi citizens lives, and more than $1 trillion! Did you protest this outrageous spending!? And now that Obama is in office, suddenly Ryan (and you, no doubt) are 'anti-spending.' What a hypocrite Ryan is.
Now, apparently, you and other misguided people want to put Romney and this same party back in office who adhere to the SAME policies as Bush -- tax cuts for the wealthy, and huge spending on the military while raising taxes on the middle class. Also, remember what your hero, Dick Cheney, stated so famously: "Deficits don't matter." Are THESE the kind of people you want back in charge? If so, you need to have your head examined! Obama on the other hand, is anti-war, he also feels that the wealthy need to pay their fair share, and he has the backs of the middle class. I can't wait to vote for Obama. Sorry, but you're going to have to wait another 4 years until your wealth-focused, war-mongering party has a chance to get back in charge.

Hasn't even worked one day? Not one day in 15 years? Really? Not even credit for one day? When IRead More worked at the Press & Guide (which eliminated my position in a budget restructuring that has continued under various corporate owners at the P&G for a decade and a half, resulting in them moving their offices to Southgate and more recently just out-and-out eliminating their editor, sports editor and photographer) we had a policy of no anonymous letters to the editor. This was done because, while everyone has the right to express their opinion, putting a real name with an opinion meant people displayed more decorum and, well, less cowardice than is allowed in online comments from the shadows. Joseph, the benefit of post-employment health care after just eight years of service may have, in the early 1990s, been more acceptable in some way I can't figure (retention of key department heads has been cited as a reason, as was that it apparently mirrored a benefit for state officials), but it clearly was part of the excesses of Wayne County that was unjustifiable and unsustainable in the 2000s. This practice was ended two years ago by a resolution I introduced.
