Dearborn Train Station to Honor Congressman John Dingell

Dearborn City Council unanimously approved the train station name July 23.

Dearborn’s new train station will be named in honor of longtime Congressman John Dingell Jr., according to the city.

Mayor John B. O’Reilly, Jr. initiated the recognition due to Dingell’s longtime support of the community that he's lived in for decades.

“He has represented Dearborn since 1964. That’s longer than any other city in his historic career,” O’Reilly, a former Dingell staffer, said in a prepared statement. “He is just a true public servant. He is humble and also incredibly effective."

The Intermodal Passenger Rail Station, under construction on Michigan Avenue near Brady, is set to open in 2014. The congressman helped champion the effort on a federal level to ensure its quick progression, according to the city.

The project costs $28.2 million from the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. It aims to allow passengers to "easily connect with rental cars, taxis, buses and shuttles, as well as bike and pedestrian paths, as they travel to jobs, shops, schools and visitor attractions in Dearborn."
