Trenton Fire Department Awarded Over $736,000 in Grant Funding

Trenton Program Coordinator Barb Olsen recently wrote a grant requesting funding to hire six new fire fighters for two years.

A representative of U.S. Sen. Carl Levin's office confirmed Thursday that the Trenton Fire Department is poised to receive $736,410 in grant money from the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters grant program.

“It is vital that we maintain the fire protection our citizens need,” Levin said in a  release.  “These grants will help the fire departments in Trenton and Wyandotte hire more first responders to protect their communities when an emergency strikes.”

Thw Wyandotte Fire Department is set to receive $616,876.

The Assistance to Firefighters Grants are part of the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program, a competitive grant process to help ensure that fire departments nationwide have the frontline firefighters they need to protect their communities, according to the release.

Trenton officials did not comment Thursday as to specifically what is to become of the hundreds of thousands of dollars in new funding. Trenton Mayor Kyle Stack said she needs to meet with city officials to devise a plan for the funding.

Officials at the Trenton Fire Department applied for the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant this year, which requested funding to hire six new firefighters for two years.
