Police think a 9-year-old Canton girl tried to get back into her parents’ vehicle after she was dropped off at school this morning, and was struck and killed as the vehicle pulled away.

The name of the student who was killed in the accident at Ruth Eriksson Elementary School about 8:30 a.m. Monday hasn’t been released, the Detroit Free Press reports.

Sgt. Jim Harrison of the Canton Police Department said he wasn’t sure if the vehicle was driven by the girl’s mother or father.

The child was transported to the University of MIchigan Hospital, where she later died.

Police are continuing their investigation. Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to call (734) 394-5400.
