Dearborn Teen Charged With Accidental Shooting of 11-Year-Old Brother
The 17-year-old boy was taken into custody of the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.
An 11-year-old boy has been hospitalized after being shot by his 17-year-old brother in Dearborn.
Dearborn Police are still investigating the shooting, which occurred on Saturday, July 9, in the boys' home. At this time, said Dearborn Lt. Neil Myers, "it appears it was, in fact, an accident."
The younger boy was shot in the hip by his brother and transported to a local hospital, where he was treated for his injury. At this time, police are reporting that the injury sustained is not life-threatening.

Dearborn Patch reader Jessie McDonald, who lives on the same street as the family, was home when the shooting occurred, she said on Facebook.
"I came out and saw police everywhere," she said. "The parents had already transported the boy to )."

The 17-year-old brother was taken into custody and subsequently charged by the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office with the reckless use of a firearm, a misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of 90 days in jail.
Lt. Myers said that the boy is already out on bond and is ordered to contact the court within 10-14 days.
Police said the weapon involved belonged to the victim’s mother and was properly registered with authorities. No charges have been filed against the mother.
Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad commented that the incident is tragic.
“The safety and securing of a weapon needs to be the highest priority to all gun owners," he said in a statement.
