Suspended Dearborn Police Officer Pleads 'No Contest' to Drunk Driving Charges

Eric Anthony Krawczyk will face sentencing at the 19th District Court on Aug. 13.

A Dearborn police officer pleaded no contest to driving with a high blood-alcohol content at a pretrial hearing on Wednesday before 19th District Judge Sam Salamey.

Eric Anthony Krawczyk, 41, also pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident and to the civil infraction of driving without automobile insurance.

Krawczyk, an 18-year-veteran with the Dearborn Police Department, was arrested on April 20 after allegedly hitting two vehicles and a tree while driving near Carlysle and Audette streets in Dearborn while he was off duty.

A preliminary breath test administered at the time of his arrest showed his blood-alcohol level at 0.265 percent. The state’s drunk driving limit is 0.08 percent and the “super drunk” threshold is 0.17 percent.

Krawczyk’s attorney, Martha Champine of the Police Officers Association of Michigan, and city attorney Nicole Tabin, agreed to the plea before the exam. Krawczyk told Salamey he was too drunk to remember what happened on the night of the incident and will defer to the report filed by the arresting officers. Champine said the no contest plea was entered because of civil liability issues.

After accepting the plea, Salamey continued Krawczyk’s $200 personal bond. As a condition of the bond, Krawczyk cannot drive, use alcohol or drugs, have a weapon or leave Wayne, Oakland or Macomb counties.

Sentencing was set for 1 p.m. Aug. 13 before Salamey at the 19th District Court.

According to Heritage Newspapers, Krawczyk has been suspended without pay from the police department. Calls to Chief Ronald Haddad's office were not returned on Wednesday.
