Police Arrest Suspect in Spate of Vandalism to Cars

Nearly two dozen vehicles were "keyed" in the same neighborhood, but the activity has ceased since the arrest of the suspect, Dearborn police said.

Dearborn police have arrested a 34-year-old man they think is responsible for a spate of vandalism in which 23 vehicles were damaged in the same neighborhood.

The vandalism occurred between July 4-14, police said, and no incidents have been reported since the arrest late this week of Omar Hamade.

"This type of serial offender will never be tolerated as it erodes the security of the community,” Dearborn Chief of Police Ronald Haddad said in a news release. “We will prosecute these offenders to the fullest degree possible."

Hamade was arraigned on malicious destruction of personal property Thursday before 19th District Court Chief Judge Mark W. Somers, who set bond at $5,000. Hamade was released from custody, but must wear an electronic monitoring tether.

Police got a break in the investigation of the vandalism Monday when a witness reported the had confronted Hamade as he stood with two rocks in his hand next to a 2012 Yukon Denali in the 400 block of S. Waverly. The vehicle had fresh “key” marks along the driver’s side, police said in a news release.

When confronted, Hamade reportedly dropped the stones and fled the scene before police arrived.
