Dearborn police arrested a 35-year-old Dearborn Heights man on suspicion of identity theft on June 29.
Officers were dispatched to the area of Outer Drive and Pelham Road in response to calls that a man appeared to be passed out and was in a vehicle that was blocking traffic.
Police located Mahdy Mohammad Qasem operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Further investigation revealed Qasem was in possession of identification and personal documents belonging to a Connecticut man. According to police, the Connecticut man indicated he was recently a victim of identity theft and has been trying to restore his credit record for five months due to the damage done by the theft.
The Dearborn Police Department is working with the Darien Police Department in Connecticut and the Erie County Sheriff’s Department in Ohio, who are handling related investigations involving the same victim.
The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office charged Qasem with eight counts of identity theft. Qasem was arraigned by 19th District Court Judge Mark Somers. A preliminary exam is set for July 12 at 9 a.m. Bond was set at $100,000 cash.
