‘Officer, You’re Under Arrest’: Tables Turned on 2 Dozen Detroit Cops

Nearly two dozen Detroit police officers will be suspended for an unspecified amount of time because they have outstanding arrest warrants, mostly for unpaid parking violations in the suburbs.

The warrants aren’t for criminal offenses, Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody told The Detroit News. The newspaper cited a police source who said 23 officers were suspended, a number Woody couldn’t confirm. In addition to parking violations, the offenses may also have involved a couple of moving violations, he said.

The officers are being suspended with pay until they take care of their legal obligations and get their licenses back. The suspensions followed a routine, biannual check of officers’ records. No felonies were involved and some of the suspended officers were driving with expired or suspended licenses.

“We can’t have people with suspended licenses driving city-owned vehicles, and we can’t have officers out there with outstanding arrest warrants,” he told the newspaper.

Woody said some of the suburban communities play hardball when tickets aren’t paid on a timely basis and issue warrants if a fine is late by even a day.
