Police Blotter: 4 Car Break-ins Reported at Fitness USA

A number of cars were broken into at the local health club, and some of them are believed to be connected. Also, a man was arrested for trespassing at Henry Ford Medical Center.

String of Car Break-ins Reported at Fitness USA

Four attempted or actual larcenies were reported at within the past week.

The first occurred 7 p.m. Feb. 7. A Redford resident had her PT Cruiser parked in the gym's lot and saw that the front passenger side window had been smashed, and her purse stolen. The purse, which was stashed under her front seat, had contained a wallet with $26 in it, sunglasses and a personal CD player.

On Feb. 11, three more break-ins were reported, although one was not successfully completed.

The first was reported as occurring between 8:45 and 10:30 a.m. by a Dearborn Heights resident, who said she had parked her vehicle there came back to find that her rear passenger window had been broken out and her purse was missing. The purse contained her driver’s license and pain medication.

Then, just before 3 p.m. the same day, Dearborn Police responded to another report of an attempted larceny, although the perpetrator was unable to gain access to the car because of a laminate film on the window that keeps the car from being broken into.

While taking that report, the officer was approached by another member of the gym who said that her rear passenger window had been broken and her purse stolen, which contained several credit cards, as well as her license and social security card.

Information on the person who may have committed the crimes was given to police by the Fitness USA manager, who was told by a member of the gym that they had witnessed a break-in on Feb. 9. No report was made for that theft.

The possible offender was described as a heavy-set, light-skinned woman with brown hair, driving a red Ford Taurus.

Police have not apprehended any suspects in the thefts.

Theft Dressed as Doctor Arrested

A Detroit resident was arrested for trespassing at the Henry Ford Medical Center on Feb. 9 just after noon.

The man was recognized by security as a previously reported suspicious person who was going around to area hospitals and gaining entry in order to steal pills or items of value. He was spotted in an “Authorized Personnel Only” area of the hospital wearing blue hospital scrubs, but with no hospital ID on him.

When apprehended by security, the man stated that his intentions at the hospital were to gain entry “and steal anything of value, like purses.” After he was picked up by Dearborn Police, he also stated he had gone to three Henry Ford hospitals to try to gain access to secured medical storage areas, and also that he has tried to pickpocket medications from mental health facilities patients.
