Update, 11 a.m. Friday: Dearborn police have shared that Gus—a 7-year-old pug stolen from a Dearborn home on Wednesday, Jan. 30—was recovered Thursday from a home in southwest Detroit by the department's Surveillance Unit.

Dearborn Chief of Police Ronald Haddad credited the help of the dog's owner in his timely return.

"It was a rewarding moment for our officers as they reunited Gus with his happy owner, and from the photo of Gus, it appears he was pretty happy as well," Haddad sai in a statement. "We're glad we were able to wrap this case up in a day thanks in large part to the quick thinking of Gus' owner, who was able to provide us with the license plate number of the suspect's car.

"We ask that anyone who sees suspicious vehicles around town obtain license plate numbers whenever possible and I would refer people to the Dearborn Animal Shelter for information on how to ensure that their pets are able to be identified in the event of loss or theft."

According to a crime report, Gus was stolen from a home on the 3800 block of Dudley around 10 a.m. Wednesday.

The owner told police that he witnessed a black, four-door, older-model car back into his driveway. A heavy-set female in her 30s with dark hair got out of the car, cut a ziptie that was holding the gate closed, took the dog and drove off west on Dartmouth Street.

The car had a baby seat in the back. The license plate on the vehicle read CLA4004.

Gus is not microchipped, and does need daily medication.

A 7-year-old Pug was reportedly stolen from a Dearborn home Wednesday morning, according to Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter.

The daughter of the owner of the dog contacted the shelter in order to help spread the message about the theft. A police report was also filed.

According to a post on the shelter’s Facebook page, the dog was allegedly taken from the fenced-in yard of a home near Dartmouth and Dudley. The suspect was described as a woman in her 30s with dark hair, driving a four-door, older model black car, according to the shelter's Facebook page.

Gus, the dog, is a neutered male pug with a black and tan coat and a graying muzzle. He has dark floppy ears and weighs around 30 pounds.

Gus needs daily medications, so his owners are hoping to find the thief as quickly as possible to get their dog safely home.

Anyone with information is asked to call 313-282-1388.

The shelter also shared advice to owners of small pets.

"If you have small animals," said shelter spokeswoman Sandra Boulton, "do not leave them unattended."

This is not the first stolen pet the Dearborn area has seen. In 2011, a dog was reported as stolen during a home burglary in Dearborn Heights. During the same time period, a man in Dearborn told police that someone had stolen kittens from his yard.
