Dearborn Student Trains With Michigan State Police

High school students across Michigan experienced the training needed to become Michigan State Police troopers at an explorer camp in Lansing July 7-12.

This week, 50 Michigan high school students experienced the training needed to become Michigan State Police troopers during the 38th annual Michigan District of Kiwanis Student Trooper Program.

The program began on July 7 at the MSP Training Academy in Lansing and concluded on July 12.

Between wake-up at 5 a.m. and lights-out at 10 p.m., the students learned about traffic and criminal law, defensive tactics, firearms and marksmanship fundamentals, first-aid, water safety, narcotics, search and seizure, patrol tactics, law enforcement career opportunities, forensic science, underwater recovery and character issues of leadership.

"Each student has the opportunity to get a taste of what it takes to become a Michigan State Police trooper," said Capt. Kari Kusmierz, commander of the MSP Training Academy. "The Kiwanis Law Enforcement Career Academy promotes the importance of education and helps build teamwork while learning about law enforcement fundamentals. The students also learn the importance of courtesy and respect in order to serve as positive role models to others in their community."

The school is designed for highly motivated young men and women who are seriously interested in a career in law enforcement. Each student is sponsored by one of the Michigan District of Kiwanis Clubs located throughout the state. The school is hosted by MSP with the assistance of deputies and officers from other Michigan police agencies.

John Solimanto of Dearborn was sponsored by the Dearborn Outer Drive Kiwanis. Club.
