Dearborn Police Warn Rash of Thefts Due to Unlocked Cars

Dearborn police officers are reminding residents to lock vehicle doors and keep possessions out of plain view.

The Dearborn Police Department is reminding residents to lock their doors when leaving a vehicle unattended due to a recent string of thefts around the city.

"Remember to keep your vehicle locked and windows rolled up even if the vehicle is parked in your driveway or in front of your home. Recent research indicates that 40 percent of all reported larcenies from automobiles occurred from vehicles that were unsecured," the police department said in a press release.

According to Crime Mapping.com, Dearborn Police were called to a home in the 5900 block of Mercury Drive on Aug. 7 in response to a larceny complaint. Similar calls were reported on Robertson Street, Beechmont Street, Maple Street and N. Highland Street.

Vehicle thefts were also reported in the 9500 block of Dix and the 24000 block of Michigan Avenue.

The Dearborn Police recommend the following precautions:

• Park you vehicle in your garage or in your driveway whenever possible. 

• Do not leave valuables (GPS units, MP3 players, laptops, money, etc) visible in your vehicle. 

• Never leave any personal information in your vehicle such as the vehicle title, registration, or insurance.

• Avoid leaving vehicles running unattended even for a short period. 

• Be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts. 

• Report all suspicious activity anonymously to 313-943-3030.
