Dearborn Police Officer Rescues Cat from Hot Truck

The following information was supplied by the Dearborn Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

A Dearborn police officer patrolling a neighborhood in the 1400 block of Elm Street rescued a cat from a locked truck parked near the intersection of Elm and Oakwood streets on Thursday.

According to police reports, a neighbor called police after spotting the cat locked inside a green 1996 Toyota pick-up truck parked outside of her home with only its windows rolled down about an inch. The woman told police that a man had been living in the truck for three weeks, but she was unaware that there were any animals inside it.

Upon inspecting the vehicle, the officer discovered the truck's cab covered in rotting garbage with flies and an "intense odor" near a litter box. The officer also found a black and white cat panting with its tongue out that did not have any water.

The police officer was able to pull the driver's side window down far enough to reach into the truck and unlock the door. The cat was removed from the vehicle and taken to the Dearborn Animal Shelter. The truck is registered to an address in Kentucky. A note was left on the truck's windshield instructing the owner to retrieve the cat from the animal shelter.
