Dearborn Heights Teen Charged in Drive-By Shooting

Abbas Ali Al-Murshidy, 17, was arraigned April 2 for the Feb. 27 crime after a lengthy investigation.

A 17-year-old Dearborn Heights resident has been charged in a February drive-by shooting at a Dearborn home.

Abbas Ali Al-Murshidy was arrested and arraigned by video April 2. He was charged with three counts of assault with intent to murder, one count of discharging a firearm at a building, one count of felony firearm and malicious destruction of personal property.

The teenager faces up to life in prison if convicted of the intent to murder charge.

The arrest and arraignment come more than a month after the alleged crime took place.

At 8:45 p.m. Feb. 27, Dearborn police responded to a call at 2801 Roulo on a report of a drive-by shooting. At the time of the shooting, two adults and five children were inside the home.

No one was hurt, but several rounds entered a bedroom where three of the children were located. Police say the shots nearly hit the youth.

An investigation took place throughout the month of March, eventually leading to Al-Murshidy's arrest. Police have not released details as to what evidence led them to identifying the Dearborn Heights teen as the alleged perpetrator, but Police Chief Ronald Haddad stated that he wished it hadn't taken them so long to make the arrest.

"While it is unacceptable that it took more than a month to close this case, it is important to point out that individuals who commit violent crime in Dearborn will be held accountable," Haddad said in a statement.

Al-Murshidy's bond has been set at $100,000 cash. A preliminary examination has been scheduled for 9 a.m. April 15 at the .
