Dearborn Fire Chief Joseph Murray encourages all residents to enjoy the summer season while being safe and looking out for loved ones and neighbors.

Below is a list of some important summer safety tips for residents:

Barbecue and Fire Safety

  • Keep grills at least 10 feet from structures.
  • Keep children away from the grill and never leave it unattended.
  • Never use the grill inside a home or garage.
  • Do not store propane tanks inside a house.
  • Never leave portable fire places unattended.
  • Never allow children to play with fireworks as they can reach up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

Sun Safety

  • The sun is strongest between 10a.m. and 2 p.m. Limit exposure during these hours.
  • Apply sunscreen with SPF of at least 15, 30 minutes prior to going outside. And reapply every two hours or after swimming.

Heat Safety

  • Recognize signs of heatstroke and exhaustion: Fatigue, thirst, cramping, dizziness and nausea.
  • Keep hydrated and drink lots of water. Limit intense physical activities on excessively hot and humid days.
  • Monitor those at high risk for adverse heat reactions (young children, seniors, overweight and the physically ill).
  • Never leave children in the car.

Playground Safety

  • Falls are the leading cause of injury amongst children. Be careful with heights over hard surfaces.
  • The most common cause of playground fatalities is strangulation from clothing, strings or rope. Never attach ropes, pet leashes or clotheslines to playground equipment.
Enjoy the summer, but remember to be safe!
