Crime Report: Joyrider Does Thousands in Damage at Fairlane Club

The following information was supplied by the Dearborn Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

opened Monday morning to find that extensive damage had been done to their newly resurfaced tennis courts, according to reports.

A manager at the club called in the report, saying that he came in that morning and saw what appeared to be multiple tire tracks over much of the five courts.

The resurfacing–which reportedly cost close to $12,000–is part of a series of improvements happening at the Fairlane Club. The business changed hands this year, and the new owners have been making efforts to upgrade the facility.

Police were able to review surveillance video footage from the previous night, which clearly showed the entire act of vandalism–and the culprit.

According to police, the video showed two vehicles entering the Fairlane Club's parking lot around 2:30 a.m. Monday. One car left, but the driver of the second vehicle–a Toyota 4-Runner–drove onto the courts, which were still soft from the resurfacing.

The driver–identified as a man from the video–proceeded to do donuts throughout the courts for several minutes. At one point, he became stuck in the pavement and had to manually push his vehicle out. He then got back into the SUV, hit a tree on his driver's side, and drove off.

In all, Fairlane Club staff estimated that around $5,000 in damage was done to the courts.

Several pieces of debris from the accident were left at the scene–as well as the man's cell phone.

According to police, a woman called the phone while the investigation was happening and identified herself as the daughter of the phone's owner. She was told to come pick up the phone, but never did so.

Police were able to identify the driver as a man from Lincoln Park.

The Fairlane Club could not immediately be reached for comment on the situation.
