Careless Smoking Likely Cause of Fatal Dearborn Fire

Dearborn fire officials think a fire that claimed a 90-year-old woman's life Sunday started in a room without a working smoke detector.

Fire investigators think careless smoking was the cause of a fire that claimed the life of an elderly Dearborn woman last Sunday morning.

Firefighters were called to the home of Lucille Tinker in the 2600 block of Byrd about 8:47 a.m. Sunday and found the 90-year-old woman dead inside, The Press & Guide reports.

Fire Chief Joseph Murray said investigators found evidence that Tinkernshe had been smoking. Tinker lived alone in the house.

The house was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at the scene. Murray said the fire appears to have started in a room that did not have a working smoke detector.

“When we arrived, there was a lot of fire in there in a short amount of time,” he said.
