Bond Denied for Dearborn Man Linked to Hezbollah Terror Group

U.S. Magistrate Judge R. Steven Whalen says Mohammad Hamdan is a "confused young man," but says there's no evidence he wants to harm America.

Mohammad Hamdan, 22, was denied bond after U.S. Magistrate Judge R. Steven Whalen pored over transcripts and secretly recorded conversation and concluded he is a “confused young man,” the Detroit Free Press is reporting. Whalen said, however, that there is no evidence that Hamdan wants to harm America.

The U.S. government classifies Hezbollah a terrorist group and Hamdan has been charged with violating a law that prohibits support for such groups. Hamdan’s attorney, Art Weiss, says he will fight the charge.

Hamdan, a Lebanese national, was detained by the FBI on March 16 at Detroit Metro Airport before he could board an Air France flight to Paris and eventually Lebanon, where Hezbollah is based.

He allegedly plotted to travel to Syria to fight with Hezbollah, which he had allegedly received military training from as a young child. The FBI learned of his alleged plans from a confidential informant.
