3 Charged with Operating Illegal Sports Betting Ring at Dearborn Sandwich Shop, Bar

Dozens of bettors from metro Detroit may have been involved in the alleged illegal gambling ring, putting the "safety of Michigan citizens ... in jeopardy," Attorney General Bill Schuette says.

Three Dearborn men are being charged for their involvement in an Internet sports gambling  operation that Attorney General Bill Schuette says involved dozens of bettors from metro Detroit.

The charges come after a police investigation by the Fraser Police Department, MLive reports.

Charges were filed against Ray Arfan, 42, the alleged ringleader of a sports gambling operation based out of the Avenue Bar, 13277 Michigan and a Subway restaurant at 12841 Michigan.

"Arfan accepted wagers on sporting events and the operation provided gamblers with accounts to use on an internet website," Schuette's office said in a statement Tuesday. "When a player needed to add money to an account or receive payment he would do that at one of Arfan's businesses. …”

The two also helped process payments and recruit new bettors, MLive said.

"The safety of Michigan citizens is put in jeopardy when criminal activity goes unchecked," Schuette said in a prepared statement. “The ringleaders of illegal gambling operations and their accomplices will face the consequences for breaking the law and undermining public safety.”
