Assil Srour Makki, a 19-year old Dearborn resident who had an 8-month old son, took her own life on Tuesday, Jan. 21, police reported.

The young mother died from a gunshot wound in her home Tuesday evening.

"We’ve ruled out foul play, and unfortunately our investigation leads us to believe that she took her own life," said Lt. Douglas Topolski of the Dearborn police investigative division. "It’s a tragedy."

Makki moved to the United States from Lebanon when she was 13, The Arab American News reported. She had been married to Fouad Makki for a year and a half.

Her mother-in-law, Samia Makki, described her in the article as "beautiful and calm."

"She loved my son, and my son loved her," Samia told The Arab American News. "She was a good person, very polite and quiet."

She also added that Makki had a troubled childhood and was raised by her aunt after her parents abandoned her.

Hundreds of community members expressed their condolences to the family for the tragedy on social media Wednesday morning.

"Deeply saddened by the tragic event that's occurred in the Dearborn community today," said Facebook user Hassan Abdallah in the Dearborn Area Community Members Facebook group. "May God bless the families involved in this tragedy with the patience and strength to deal with this event and to stay steadfast in their prayers for better days."

However, news about Makki's death left many community members shocked and looking for answers, some making false accusations and assumptions about the circumstances of her death.

Makki will be laid to rest in her hometown of Batoulieh, Lebanon, according to the article. Her family held a funeral service for her on Thursday at The Islamic Institute of Knowledge in Dearborn.
