1 Rescued, 1 Still Missing After Falling Into Rouge River

Dive teams are conducting a search and rescue mission to find a man who fell into the Rouge River Tuesday afternoon.

A man and a woman reportedly fell into the river shortly before 2 p.m. and were struggling and pleading for help, The Detroit News reports

It’s not clear how they fell into the river at the Ford Estate, located off Fair Lane Drive west of Evergreen Road.

A 23-year-old Dearborn woman, who was not identified, was rescued about 100 yards south of where witnesses first saw the pair struggling. She was treated at a nearby hospital for a non-life-threatening injury.

After her companion didn’t turn up in a search of the banks, Downriver dive teams were called in. The Coast Guard was also standing by, WDIV, Channel 4, reports. The Rouge's current was moving fast after recent rains, creating some doubt about whether a rescue boat could be put on the water.

Authorities were calling the operation a search-and-rescue operation, the TV station said.

The missing male is described as Asian, and was wearing a white and blue striped shirt and tan pants,  The television station said its sources identify the man as a University of Michigan-Dearborn graduate student.

The two were near scenic outlooks behind the estate when they fell in the river, WDIV said.
