Chapter Two- the side of Dearborn building standards.
Chapter one left us with MIOSHA closing down the renovation of the Dearborn City Hall roof in the late 1980s, where serious breeches of safety rules and code standards were violated. In the early 1990s, a highly ranked city official in Dearborn, a person I personally know and admire because of the principled way they conduct their life, was a vocal critic of the city practice of charging buildings owners for inspections that weren't performed. Imagine that paying for something you don't get; FRAUD! That reality was borne out in the Whittington Apartment fire in south Dearborn. Fortunately, that fire didn't have the same consequences of the Pingree Apartment fire disaster in Detroit that killed some twenty plus people. Once the fire was extinguished, fire fighters discovered a number of building code violations, some of which exceeded the normal annual inspection cycle. The practice of charging builder owners for inspections not performed put the lives of people in danger. Criminal! The righteous indignation today over the garage ordnance pales in comparison with this criminal practice. Stay tuned for chapter three of this ongoing, long-range exercise of flawed government. P3
