Q & A with Oakwood Dr. Raj Goswami

Q:  Why did you decide to become a doctor?
A:  Initially, it was my father. As I grew older and I went to college, I found that I really liked science. Combine that with the ability to help people—and then having good mentors as I was growing up. Public service is an important part of a person’s overall being.

Q: What was your biggest surprise when you started practicing medicine?
A:  The amount of that there is for good medical care in the community.  There are a lot of patients out there that don’t get the proper medical attention that they need and deserve. There’s a shortage of good, responsible medical that’s out there.

Q: What once piece of advice would you give someone studying medicine?
A: Take your time deciding what your career will take. Try to sample from as many different specialties as you can, so you can have a wide experience when you make that important decision.

Q: Where do you see your field in 10 years?
A: Hopefully, with greater availability of less expensive technology, patients will be able to play a greater role in their health care, with self-monitoring equipment and easier information transfer to the physician. People’s smart phones will be able to monitor blood pressure; they’re talking about technology that implants in somebody’s eye and will tell you immediately what their blood sugar currently is. With the advent of that new technology, it’s going to be easier, I think, to manage patients more effectively and cost effectively.
