Athletic Trainer at Henry Ford Hospital Earns Top State Honor

The award recognizes exemplary dedication and commitment to excellence in the care of high school athletes

Jake Heikkinen, a Henry Ford Hospital licensed athletic trainer from Troy, is being honored as High School Athletic Trainer of the Year by the Michigan Athletic Trainers’ Society.

The award recognizes Heikkinen for exemplary dedication and commitment to excellence in the care of high school athletes. MATS is a professional organization for athletic trainers, athletic training students and others who advance athletic training across the state.

Heikkinen, who joined Henry Ford’s Division of Sports Medicine in 2012, serves as the athletic trainer for Lakeview High School in St. Clair Shores. He also works with patients at the Henry Ford Medical Center-Sterling Heights.

Henry Ford athletic trainers support athletic programs at more than 15 high schools and four colleges throughout the tri-county area. They work with physicians to prevent, evaluate, diagnosis, treat and rehabilitate athletic injuries.

Heikkinen earned a bachelor’s degree in athletic training/sports medicine from Central Michigan University.
