Diary of a Democratic Delegate - The Democracy Corps

Dearborn Democratic activist Fred Hoffman writes today about an elective office you know little about - and he names names!

LOOK AT THE LIST BELOW - - - TRY TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THEY HAVE IN COMMON? - - - Stumped? . . . Then jump down to the bottom and I'll explain. . . Zeinab Bazzi, Wafa Bay Beydoun, Zahra Dabaja, Diana Larson, Janet Hazamy, Sami Khaldi, Zeinab Saab, Hassan Bazzi, Mariam Charara, Adbo Almaklani, Sandra Arnaut, Keith Poremsky, Masoud Al-Alamleh, Maria Elena Sharpe, George Hart, Laura Dudgeon, Steve Zachary, James Schillinger, Michael Aaron, Mary Bruno, Frederick Hoffman, James Stokes, Mahde Abdallah, Julia Archer, Brendan Berry, Janet Schultz, Tarel Baydoun, Jane Ahern, Joseph Helminski, Marianne Rea, Ali Beydoun, Carmen Kossayda, Rose Tobin, Shawn Ellis, Leslie Herrick-Kay, Lynn Kenney, Peter Kenney, John Manoulis, Anthony Tullio, John Benzick abd Dale Suich. . .AND . . .Leonard Mier, Doug Mitchell, John Tobin, Nasser Abunab, Noureldin Noor, Richard Bananto, Priscilla Perness, Kathleen Vallecoccia, Scott Saionz, Michael Fawaz, Johnnie Salemassi, Alfred Lemmo, Joseph Fuoco, Bryce Rudder, Joann Froman, Laurie McHugh, Werner Klein, Gary Thompson, Alex Fawaz, Laura Lauer, Gabriella Runco, Rhonda Runco, William Runco, Richard Zeile, Timothy Kleczynski, Sheila Brooks, Tim Resovsky, David Patterson, Gretchen Moss, Bruce Jackson, Deborah Jackson, Paul Sophiea, Michael Talamonti, Walter Reckinger, Lynne Dabanian, Susan Krajenke, Eleanor Fisher and Nancy Jones. . .These 79 citizens were elected Tuesday as "precinct delegates," the quaint term which covers the most unknown elected office in the state.  The first group, the 41 Democrats, will convene with their colleagues from other parts of the county and congressional district to elect officers and codify party rules. Their first meeting is Aug. 18 in Taylor, and as unpaid partisans they will serve for two years.. . .The second group, the 38 Republicans, will do the same on their side of the aisle.  Depending on party rules, they may be joined by write-in candidates not yet named or later vacancy-fillers. - - - THE REAL WORK of these folks, however, should they choose to accept (some don't; they just run to see their name on the ballot),  is to work their blocks -- their voting precinct (there are 50 in Dearborn) on behalf of their candidate.  - - - If they are doing their jobs, they will be out ringing doorbells, delivering literature, covering the election polls, making phone calls and handling all the "grass roots" jobs needed by their party and their candidates - - - These delegates don't have anything directly to do with the national convention delegates, like myself, who are elected on a separate path, but they are an essential part of the political process. I SALUTE YOU ALL, Dees and Reeps, for your Service!
