Diary of a Democratic Delegate - One Month to Go

Dearborn Democratic activist Fred Hoffman, an Obama delegate at next month's Democratc national convention, previews the event and touches on Tuesday!s primary election.

One month from today, I'll be smack-dab in the middle of all the political excitement in Charlotte NC as an Obama delegate from Dearborn. Although I have been to conventions going back to 1968, this is only the second time I will hold delegate credentials, enabling me to actually VOTE at the convention. Now there won't be any surprise votes since the "work" of the party meeting is to pick a ticket that is already picked. That means the event will be all about optics - getting out the party message, giving exposure to down-ticket candidates, and stirring up enthusiasm among the troops. . . .FOR ME, THE EXCITEMENT will be palpable. On Labor Day Monday, party leaders will gather in Charlotte to help locals celebrate both the holiday and the first national party convention in the region. The business sessions run Tuesday and Wednesday, when we'll hear from First Lady Michelle Obama, President Bill Clinton and the young Latino mayor of San Antonio, Julian Castro, who may well be a presidential candidate some day. Then on Thursday, we'll move to the local football stadium in order to accommodate the crowds expected to see VP JOE BIDEN and PRESIDENT OBAMA accept re-nomination. In between, of course, there will be delegation meetings, caucuses, briefings, receptions and dozens of other events. Whew! I am tired already. . . . BEFORE THE CONVENTION, however, we have to get through the Michigan primary election season. That vote is Tuesday, and, with newly-drawn districts, there is a bit of excitement in the air. Of course, I am voting for Democrats Sen. Debbie Stabenow, Congressman John Dingell, State Rep. George Darany, County Commissioner Gary Woronchak, our great district judge Richard Wygonik (non-partisan) and YES on funding to keep our magnificent art museum alive. Hope you do too! . . .Happy Homecoming!
