"Walk a Mile in Her Boots"

VFW Post 78 is honored to be hosting the "Walk a Mile in Her Boots" art project at our Post Wed. August 14th-Sunday August 18th. This display will be open to all VFW Members and their guests all 5 days (during business hours) and open to the public Friday August 16th from 5pm-8pm.

There’s nothing fancy about combat boots. But for a project organized by Volunteers of America Michigan, these most utilitarian symbols of military service are becoming a source of inspiration and creativity for female veterans.
The boots are becoming canvases covered with colors and slogans and decals, all telling powerful stories. These were stories not often told, even among the women themselves. But now they are part of the “Her Boots: Step Up for the Stand Down” project. The idea is to raise awareness through a traveling display about the issues facing female veterans, and to publicize the Great Lakes Stand Down for Female Veterans, Sept. 16 in Lansing. The display also will be exhibited in Grand Rapids this fall as part of that city’s ArtPrize competition.
For many female veterans, participating in the project is an achievement in itself.
“It’s an opportunity for them to take pride in being a female veteran,” said Heather Nystrom, senior manager of social services for Volunteers of America Michigan, and an Army veteran herself. “Many women don’t identify themselves as veterans, and this is a way to do so.”
