Royal Oak, Michigan (January 31, 2013) – During national Eating Disorder Awareness Month, Inner Door Center® (317 E. Eleven Mile Rd. Royal Oak, Michigan 48067), will be holding events targeted at high school and university students in metro Detroit, Lansing and Mount Pleasant to draw attention to the prevalence of a condition which affects up to 24 million people in America. One in 200 people suffer from anorexia which, tragically, has the highest mortality rate of any mental illness; 10% of anorexics die within 10 years of developing the disease. All events are open to the public.

Inner Door Center® is a comprehensive eating disorder treatment center which treats anorexia, bulimia, binge-eating and diabulimia (a condition where individuals with diabetes misuse their medication). Beverly Price, CEO and founder of the center, created the unique Reconnect with Food® Yoga-Based Eating Disorder Treatment Healing System and has published and presented numerous peer reviewed studies in medical journals and at conferences. She also has a DVD called  Reconnect with Food…Unplugged! ($34.95) available at her website, www.innerdoorcenter.com The school and university events are in part partly sponsored by Inner Door Foundation, the center’s non-profit organization which promotes awareness and treatment of eating disorders.

Price and her staff – psychologists, therapists, registered dietitians and physicians - are with patients from beginning to end of their treatment cycle, providing partial hospitalization/day treatment and out-patient psychotherapy for eating disorders.

“Eating disorders can destroy lives but so many people don’t understand what the disorders are or that there is effective treatment in Michigan,” said Price, a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist through the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals (IAEDP). “My team is committed to the successful treatment of patients using our unique approach of evidenced-based Mindful Yoga Therapy, and we are improving lives every day. February is an important month for those who struggle, where the national health focus is on Eating Disorders. Our goal is to reach those who remain untreated – only one in 10 people with eating disorders seek treatment - and give them hope for a life not controlled by food.”

Sterling Heights mother Cindy Travis sees Inner Door Center® as a life-saver for her 15-year-old daughter Kayla, who was suffering from a combination of anorexia and bulimia. “She was in denial and angry, but Inner Door taught her to eat again, and then about mindful eating, and the yoga therapy really helped her separate her body from her emotions,” she explains. “She is still early in her recovery but is feeling so much better about herself. As far as I’m concerned, Inner Door saved her life.”

For Wayne State University student, Analena Iacobelli, Inner Door provided a holistic and practical approach that led to her recovery two years ago. “I appreciated the smaller, less clinical surroundings,” she said. “Inner Door’s comprehensive  treatment helped me not only physically, but mentally and  was great experience during a very difficult time.” She now works at Inner Door with the Reconnect program helping others to stay stable and on track.

Schedule of Eating Disorder Awareness Month programs, which will feature yoga, a discussion relating to yoga and eating disorders, recovery stories from those that Inner Door Center® has successfully treated, ending with a candlelight vigil to commemorate those who have lost their lives to eating disorders, includes:

Way too much for a college having financial problems.

Hasn't even worked one day? Not one day in 15 years? Really? Not even credit for one day? When IRead More worked at the Press & Guide (which eliminated my position in a budget restructuring that has continued under various corporate owners at the P&G for a decade and a half, resulting in them moving their offices to Southgate and more recently just out-and-out eliminating their editor, sports editor and photographer) we had a policy of no anonymous letters to the editor. This was done because, while everyone has the right to express their opinion, putting a real name with an opinion meant people displayed more decorum and, well, less cowardice than is allowed in online comments from the shadows. Joseph, the benefit of post-employment health care after just eight years of service may have, in the early 1990s, been more acceptable in some way I can't figure (retention of key department heads has been cited as a reason, as was that it apparently mirrored a benefit for state officials), but it clearly was part of the excesses of Wayne County that was unjustifiable and unsustainable in the 2000s. This practice was ended two years ago by a resolution I introduced.

Yeah, unless the drinking trough is filled with taxpayer water.

Joseph, Are you bordering upon slander? Is this the reason for no more info? I hope you are not.Read More Perhaps you are picking up on some nasty rumors and repeating them here. You should know better than to do that. So, if you have real proof, tell it like it is and don't hedge. What you are saying in your post is dangerous to you and those who you are referring to, so, as the saying goes...put up or shut up.

Whether or not the facts of this opinion piece are true, I thoroughly believe Robert McNamara wasRead More the personal trainer for Kwame Kilpatrick. McNamera would have been spending a lot of time in prison if he didn't die. Ficano is a joke in my estimation. I know no one who wants him to remain in office. With today's survellience techniques and high tech gadgets, politicians can no longer get away with what they did in the past.
