Campaign Finance Expert Visits Dearborn on Oct. 24

The League of Women Voters will host a free presentation with Rich Robinson, executive director of the Michigan Campaign Finance Network.

When it comes to winning elections, the old saying "Money talks" remains true.

The League of Women Voters Dearborn/Dearborn Heights will host a presentation by Rich Robinson, executive director of the Michigan Campaign Finance Network (MCFN), on Oct. 24 at Christ Episcopal Church, 120 N. Military St. in Dearborn.

Robinson's presentation, titled "Dark Money & Our Democracy," will take place at 6 p.m. Students and community members are invited to attend the presentation for free.

Robinson will explore the culture of non-disclosing, nonprofit organizations that have secretly pumped millions of dollars into Michigan campaigns. Specifically, Robinson will address the 2012 Michigan Supreme Court campaigns, where more than $11 million worth of donations for Supreme Court television advertisements went undocumented.

Robinson has worked as the executive director of the MCFN for more than 12 years. During his time at the MFCN, he has been the principal investigator of the Citizen’s Guide to Michigan Campaign Finance and has  been featured in the Detroit Free Press, Detroit News, and the Lansing State Journal for his commentaries on money in politics.

The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan organization, encourages the informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
