Veterans Day in Dearborn: Local Deals, Events and Ceremonies to Honor Vets

Looking for a way to celebrate Veterans Day?

Veterans Day is about honoring the men and women who have served in our country's armed services. A simple "thank you" will do, but in Dearborn, there are other ways to honor the holiday–from local events to discounts and special exhibits celebrating service to our country.

Dearborn Veterans Day Ceremony

Held at in the City Council Chambers, this event will honor Dearborn Veteran of the Year Richard Fleek, and will be led by newly installed Dearborn Allied War Veterans Commander Tom Wilson.

“Veterans Day is our chance to offer a sincere thank you to those who serve and protect us. Dearborn has a long tradition of supporting these men and women,” said Mayor John B. O’Reilly. “I encourage our residents to show their appreciation, then continue to honor and help veterans throughout the year."

The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. Friday, and will be followed by an Open House until 2 p.m. at American Legion Post 364, located at 3001 S. Telegraph Road.

Free admission to The Henry Ford

, Greenfield Village and will be open free of admission on Friday to all veterans and active servicemembers.

"The Henry Ford expresses immense gratitude for their sacrifice and service in times of war and peace," the museum released in a statement.

Hours are 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. for all three attractions. The last bus leaves the museum for the Factory Tour at 3 p.m.

Ponderosa Military Appreciation Day

Ponderosa Steakhouse locations–including the –will be hosting a free buffet for all veterans and current servicemembers on Monday, Nov. 14.

”Members of our military branch services and veterans are real American heroes and we want to show our appreciation for their service to our country and community,” said General Manager Conrad Knape.

The buffet runs from 11 a.m.-8 p.m.

Patriots & Peacemakers

The 's latest exhibition opens Friday. Patriots & Peacemakers: Arab Americans in Service to Our Country contains more than 170 stories of Arab Americans from 39 states (including Michigan) and Washington, D.C., who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, the Peace Corps and the diplomatic corps.

The museum is open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Friday. The exhibit runs through June 10, 2012.

Veterans Day Appreciation Dinner

The Dearborn Outer Drive Kiwanis will be hosting a dinner for veterans, servicemembers, family and friends at the Stitt VFW Post, located at 6828 N. Waverly in Dearborn Heights. The featured speaker will be a Korean War veteran who went from being a homeless teen to a Fortune 500 businessman–success he credits to the service.

Tickets are $18 for adults and $6 for students.
