Today in Dearborn: July 4

A special edition of your daily "need to knows" for Independence Day.

Today in Dearborn, like the rest of the country, we celebrate Independence Day. Here's five ways–some obvious, some not so–to ring in the holiday.

1. Fireworks: Dearborn has no July 4 show of its own, but there are to check out, including in Trenton and Westland. Take a short trip and check 'em out for a spark-filled holiday.

2. Cookout: Nothing says holiday weekend like a good old-fashioned cookout–one in which you make way too much food and spend almost as much time eating it as you do preparing it. Invite friends and family to make it worth your while. Not sure what to make? Try some of !

3. Patriotic Films: If you're already worn out from the weekend, wind down with a few films that scream "Hooray for America!" Some of our fave Fourth picks include The Patriot, The Crossing (with Michigan actor Jeff Daniels as George Washington) and, of course, Independence Day. Because nothing says patriotism like slaying some aliens.

4.Remember Our Veterans: All silliness, drinking and lighting things on fire aside, it's important to remember what days like July 4 are really about: honoring all the men and women throughout time who have fought for America. Spend time with a veteran, volunteer at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Ann Arbor, or just visit Dearborn's war memorial at . If nothing else, just take a moment to reflect on what it means to you to be American.
