'Tis the Season for Summer Camp

Not sure where to ship off the kids for camp once school lets out? Here are our top local picks.

With the choice and variety of summer camps available in southeastern Michigan, boredom won't be an option this summer for your kids. A lot of organizations, from the YMCA to your local parks and recreation department, offer dozens of choices for camps, with science, reading, sports, music and more among them. Whether you're looking for an all-around experience or a camp more focused on a particular interest, this list features a few in your town or one very close by. Feel free to add your own, as well:

Name: KinderCare
Type of camp: General variety
Cost: $209 for school-age kids, $246 for pre-K

Details: The KinderCare centers offer 12 unique camps for pre-kindergarten children and school-age children, including camps like “Wilderness 101,” “Art Expo” and “Gross and Gooey Science.”

Name: Camp Invention

Details: The national program invites students entering grades one through six to improve their scientific literacy, creativity and teamwork on five modules. Call camp director Kristie Lica at 313-827-7724 for more information about signing up.

Name: Dearborn Heights Montessori Center
Type of camp: General variety

Where: Dearborn Heights Montessori Center, 466 N. John Daly, Dearborn Heights

Deadline for registration: Registration must be done the Thursday before any given week to be part of the next week’s program.
Details: The DHMC divides its campers into toddler, preschool, lower- and upper-elementary groups and provides a well-rounded dose of math, language, art, technology and outdoor activities.

Name: Young Naturalists Program

When: June 27, 29, 30 and July 1 for the first session, and July 5-8 for the second session

Details: The first session is offered for 7- to 9-year-olds and the second session is open to 10- to 11-year-olds. Children will explore plants and animals in their natural habitats.
